Sam
My dad always wanted to make things right. I felt like I could have recoiled when he touched me, but I didnât. Dad probably needed the chance to feel some sort of connectedness right now.
Isnât it funny how parental roles change over time? When youâre a kid, you think of your parent as a superhero. When you get older, that fantastic side of them starts to dwindle, and you see the human they are. I really saw how human my dad was when my mom died. He cried a lot. Superheroes donât cry.
One of the many lies I told myself.
When I woke up, Pops told me that the church's youth group was preparing to take Christmas meals to families in need. I agreed to do so just to get out of the house. Dalton, my cousin, said he would come too. Dalton was kind of quiet and reserved. He was always reading a book when he wasnât busy. The truth is, Bart and Lisa probably made him come to socialize.
Grandma dropped us off at the church. There were a large white Lebanon Community Fellowship van and a few other kids. A parent was waiting for one of them. Then, a car pulled up, and Vicky got out. I rolled my eyes, suddenly wanting to leave, but grandma had already left.
âGood morning,â Vicky said.
I raised my eyebrows.
âWe have two new kids with us this week,â Vicky said to the others. I donât remember all their names, but I can tell you the few I do remember. One of them was named Shy. She was pretty with dark hair and dark eyes. She wore a baby blue outfit and purple snow boots. She looked like a girl that the guys fall in love with the cheesy Christmas movies that come on television. She was eighteen and getting ready to graduate this year.
There was also Benji. He was biracial with dark brown eyes. He wore a jacket, jeans, and sneakers. He held a skateboard in one hand. With him were two boys that happened to be twins, Adam and Kenan. I remember them because the three of them were very close.
The other kids I donât remember.
âThis is Sam and Dalton,â Vicky stated. âOkay, so, we have nineteen houses that we need to run the food too. The foods are packed up and ready to go. Every item is in a bag.â
At that point, two men stumbled out of the church, zipping up their jackets. One of them waved to Vicky. âAll the food is accounted for. Loaded it up this morning!â
âThanks, Matt!â Vicky recalled.
Matt patted the other man on the shoulder and jumped into a car and drove up to us. Matt rolled down his window and looked at Benji. âYou need money for today?â
âWe got it,â Vicky replied.
Matt winked at Benji.
Benji nodded as if he were too cool and turned away from Matt. He drove off.
âWe are going to drive around Lebanon, Hansonville, and Green Valley and hope to bring Christmas cheer to everybody,â Vicky said.
